July scanner prices put ground beef at $16.49 a kilogram, 12% above July 2025. Beef striploin: $38.36 a kilo, up 27% in a year. Whole chicken: $7.62 a kilo, up 8% from June and 14% from a year earlier.

Fruit did the noise. A cantaloupe averaged $4.62, 63% above last July and 20% above June. Romaine was $3.45 a head, still 22% higher than a year earlier after an 8% drop from June. Grapes fell 18% in the month, to $7.42 a kilo.

The weekly staples barely moved. Milk, 2 litres: $5.53. Eggs, a dozen: $4.95, unchanged from last July. White bread, 675 grams: $3.60. Chicken breasts: $14.68 a kilo. Two kilograms of white sugar: $2.64, down 18% on the year.

These are checkout averages, not CPI. Mix, size and quality move the sticker. Food bought in stores was still 3.1% higher than a year earlier in July, versus 3.0% for the all-items index — the 18th month groceries outran headline inflation. The cash that leaves the account is the sticker.
