Bombardier Buys Mitsubishi's Mississauga Aerospace Plant

Bombardier will acquire the assets of MHI Canada Aerospace in Mississauga, a 270,000-square-foot aerostructures plant on the edge of Toronto Pearson. About 750 Mitsubishi employees join Bombardier's roughly 18,000-person workforce. Terms stay confidential. The deal is due to close later this year, subject to regulatory approvals.

The line already builds for Bombardier: wing assemblies, fuselage sections and flight-control installs on the Global 5500 and 6500 and the Challenger 3500. A 70,000-square-foot logistics centre sits with it. The work was outsourced. It will not be.

David Murray, manufacturing EVP: "This agreement represents a key step in Bombardier's long-term growth strategy, strengthening critical capabilities, enhancing operational resilience and supporting the company's flexibility to meet growing customer demand." Mitsubishi will stay on for an orderly handoff and says it keeps a significant Canadian presence through other businesses.

You do not put 750 people and a GTA factory on the books if you think the order book is a blip. Insourcing is a bet that bizjet demand lasts long enough to pay for the line. The price is secret. The labour is not.
