TORONTO — Arcanus Aerial Systems, a Canadian-owned maker of unmanned and autonomous systems for air, land and sea, signed a letter of intent to set up at Oro Station’s new 146-acre Defence Campus in Oro-Medonte, Ontario, next to Lake Simcoe Regional Airport inside a 600-acre innovation park.

The secure campus plans more than 950,000 square feet of industrial space beside Oro Station’s 200-acre automotive campus and four-kilometre test track, pairing auto-grade engineering with defence manufacturing. Arcanus aims for a three-phase build-out: Phase 1 sovereign UAV production, integration and flight test for its Alpha and Foxtrot families against signed purchase orders and conditional allied contracts; Phase 2 land systems including unmanned ground vehicles and counter-UAS; Phase 3 autonomous maritime systems and a full multi-domain centre of excellence. The site is meant to support design, build, test and deploy for Canadian, NATO and allied demand amid NORAD modernization and Arctic sovereignty pressure.

CEO Rahim Rajwani called Oro the physical base for scaling from unmanned integrator toward a multi-domain defence prime on Canadian soil. Oro Station managing partner Geoffrey Campbell said co-locating defence with the automotive ecosystem is how Canadian SMEs grow into tomorrow’s primes. The LOI and any conditional orders remain subject to conditions.

Domestic drone and counter-drone factories are an inflation story about import substitution: building UAS at home cuts exposure to foreign supply shocks that spike the cost of defending borders and critical infrastructure.
